Year 2 - Mrs Helliwell and Mrs Carroll
Welcome to Y2! This is a very important year group. We have lots of exciting topics in Y2 and here is just a flavour of things to look forward to.
We begin by taking a trip with Captain Cook, a famous explorer and map maker (cartographer). We find out about some of the places he visited and some of the animals he found out about. What a surprise it must have been to come across a kangaroo for the first time! Parents who are keen to help their children find out more, might like to take a trip to either the Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby or the Captain Cook birthplace museum in Marton (this one is highly recommended and very ‘child friendly’), the next time they are heading North!
After that, we will be taking a trip back in time to 1666 to find out about the Great Fire of London. We learn about life in London at that time and how we know about the past from different sources of information, such as the diaries of Samuel Pepys.
Christmas is a busy time! We will be using our Christmas play, Babushka, to do some comprehension work in order to have a better understanding of the story, the setting and the characters. Then we will be busy learning songs, practising lines and perfecting our acting skills, ready for the performance to parents at Christmas!
‘Amazing Creatures’ is where we find out about different animals. We also begin to explore Roald Dahl’s ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ and find out about the characters ‘Boggis, Bunce and Bean’!
We find out about plants around the world through our topic ‘Global Gardens’. Our ‘green fingers’ will be put to the test when we have a go at planting seeds!
May is another busy time in the calendar when we ask parents not to take children out of school while we carry out the KS1 statutory assessments. We try to make the tests as low key as possible and the children will have practise in the preceding months to enable them to become better skilled in answering the types of questions set in the tests.
Another step back in time will be when we look at the work of Florence Nightingale and the conditions of the hospitals during the Crimean war, as part of our ‘Fighting Fit’ topic.
The last half term is when we look a little closer to home with a geography based topic focussing on Scotland. What do we know already about the British Isles? What can we find out about Scotland; the country, the people and the traditions?
For more information, take a look at our Y2 Communication Sheet which is sent out each half term.
Thank you to all the parents for your continued support. We would like to be able to work together to make sure that everyone in Year 2 reaches their full potential and has a very successful year.
